What is Kai Po Che! movie?

Kai Po Che! is a Hindi phrase that means "I have cut the kite", which is used as a cry of victory in kite-flying contests. The film uses this phrase as a metaphor for the friendship and aspirations of three friends who want to start their own sports academy and shop in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The film also depicts the events of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, the 2002 Godhra train burning, and the 2002 Gujarat riots that affect their lives and dreams.

Plot summary

The film follows the lives of three friends, Ishaan "Ish" Bhatt (Rajput), Omkar "Omi" Shastri (Sadh), and Govind "Govi" Patel (Rao), who have different personalities and backgrounds. Ish is a passionate cricketer who wants to coach young talent, Omi is the nephew of a Hindu nationalist politician who helps them with funding, and Govi is a pragmatic businessman who handles the finances and management. They open a cricket shop and academy near a temple run by Omi's maternal uncle Bittu (Manav Kaul), who also supports Omi's political career.

One day, Ish meets Ali (Digvijay Deshmukh), a Muslim boy who has exceptional reflexes and batting skills. Ish decides to mentor Ali and make him a star player. However, Ali's father Naseer (Asif Basra) is reluctant to let his son play cricket, as he fears that it will distract him from his studies. Ish convinces Naseer to let Ali play by promising to pay for his education.

Meanwhile, Govi falls in love with Ish's sister Vidya (Puri), who is studying to become a doctor. They start a secret relationship, as Ish is very protective of his sister. Omi also develops feelings for Vidya, but does not express them.

Their business grows and they move to a bigger shop in a mall. However, their lives are shattered when a massive earthquake strikes Gujarat on 26 January 2001, destroying their shop and killing many people. They lose all their savings and are forced to close their academy. They also face emotional trauma, as Ish blames himself for not saving Ali from the rubble, Omi loses his parents in the disaster, and Govi feels guilty for being with Vidya when the earthquake occurred.

A year later, they try to rebuild their lives with the help of Bittu, who offers them jobs in his party. Ish resumes coaching Ali, who has recovered from his injuries and is now a promising player. Omi becomes more involved in the party's activities, especially after the Godhra train burning incident on 27 February 2002, which sparks communal violence between Hindus and Muslims. Govi tries to reopen their shop and academy, but faces difficulties in getting loans and permissions.

The situation worsens when the Gujarat riots break out on 28 February 2002, targeting Muslims and their properties. Bittu orders Omi and his men to join the mob and kill Muslims. Omi reluctantly agrees, as he feels indebted to Bittu and angry at the Muslims for killing his parents. He also believes that Bittu will help them with their business once the riots are over.

However, Omi is shocked when he finds out that Bittu has planned to attack the mosque where Ali and his family live. He tries to stop Bittu, but is too late. He sees Ish trying to protect Ali from the mob, and realizes that he has to choose between his friend and his uncle. He decides to stand by Ish, and shoots Bittu in the chest. However, Bittu's men retaliate and shoot Ish and Omi, killing them both. Govi arrives at the scene and witnesses the tragedy. He breaks down in tears, holding his dead friends in his arms.

The film ends with a flash-forward to 2010, where Govi and Vidya are married and have a son named Ishaan, after Ish. They visit Ali, who is now a successful cricketer playing for the Indian national team. Ali dedicates his Man of the Match award to Ish, Omi, and Govi, calling them his brothers and mentors.
