Download Bar on Mac: How to Find, Customize, and Clear It

How to Use the Download Bar on Mac

If you use a Mac, you probably download files, images, music, software, and other items from the web using Safari, the default browser for macOS. But do you know how to use the download bar on Mac? The download bar is a handy feature that lets you see and manage your downloaded items in one place. In this article, we will show you how to download items from the web using Safari, how to customize the download bar on Mac, and how to open and manage downloaded items on Mac.

How to Download Items from the Web Using Safari

How to Download an Item

Downloading an item from the web using Safari is easy. Just follow these steps:

download bar on mac

  • In Safari, click anything identified as a download link, or Control-click an image or other object on the webpage.

  • Choose Download Linked File. (Some webpage items cant be downloaded.)

  • Safari will start downloading the item and show it in the download bar at the top-right corner of the Safari window.

  • You can pause or resume a download by clicking the Stop or Resume button next to the filename in the download bar.

  • Safari will decompress files such as .zip files after it downloads them.

Note: If you download an item that you previously downloaded, Safari will remove the older duplicate so it doesnt take up space on your Mac.

How to Find Your Downloads Folder

By default, Safari saves downloaded items in a special folder called Downloads that is located within your user account folder. You can access the Downloads folder from the dock, Finder, or Spotlight.

  • To access the Downloads folder from the dock, look for a stack of icons or a folder icon with a downward-pointing arrow on it beside the Trash. Click that shortcut, and your Downloads folder will open.

  • To access the Downloads folder from Finder, click the Finder icon in your dock (the smiley face). In any Finder window, look in the sidebar on the left side of the window and click Downloads in the list of Favorites. If Downloads isnt listed in Favorites, you can drag it into the sidebar later.

  • To access the Downloads folder from Spotlight, press Command +Spacebar to open Spotlight Search. Type Downloads and press Return. Your Downloads folder will open.

How to Find Downloads Not in the Downloads Folder

Sometimes, you may download an item that is not saved in the Downloads folder. For example, you may have changed the download location in Safari preferences, or you may have dragged the item from the download bar to another folder or the desktop. In that case, you can use Spotlight or browsing to find the downloaded item.

  • To use Spotlight, press Command+Spacebar to open Spotlight Search. Type the name of the item you downloaded and press Return. Spotlight will show you a list of matching results. Click the one you want to open it.

  • To use browsing, open Finder and navigate to the folder or location where you think the item is saved. You can use the search box in the upper-right corner of any Finder window to narrow down your results. Double-click the item to open it.

How to Customize the Download Bar on Mac

How to Change the Download Location

If you want to change where Safari saves downloaded items on your Mac, you can do so in Safari preferences. Heres how:

  • In Safari, choose Safari > Preferences from the menu bar at the top of your screen.

  • Click the General tab.

  • Next to File download location, click the pop-up menu and choose a location. You can choose Other to select a custom folder.

  • Close the preferences window when youre done.

How to Clear the Download List

The download list shows all the items youve downloaded in Safari. It can help you keep track of your downloads, but it can also clutter up your download bar and take up space on your Mac. If you want to clear the download list, you can do so manually or automatically in Safari preferences. Heres how:

  • In Safari, choose Safari > Preferences from the menu bar at the top of your screen.

  • Click the General tab.

  • Next to Remove download list items, click the pop-up menu and choose an option. You can choose Manually to clear the list yourself, When Safari quits to clear the list every time you close Safari, or Upon successful download to clear the list after each download is completed.

  • Close the preferences window when youre done.

Note: Clearing the download list does not delete the downloaded items from your Mac. It only removes them from the list in Safari.

How to Add or Remove Buttons from the Download Bar

The download bar also contains buttons that provide quick access to frequently used features, tools, or actions in Safari. For example, you can use buttons to go back or forward, reload a webpage, share a webpage, view your bookmarks, or access extensions. You can customize the toolbar with buttons that suit your needs and preferences. Heres how:

How to Decompress or Mount Downloaded Files

Some files that you download from the web are compressed archives or disk images that contain the files you want. Compressed archives have extensions such as .zip, .rar, .tar, or .gz. Disk images have extensions such as .dmg, .iso, or .img. To access these files, you need to decompress or mount them first using Finder or other apps. Heres how:

  • To decompress a compressed archive, double-click it in Finder. Finder will create a new folder with the same name as the archive and extract its contents into it. You can then open or move the files as you wish.

  • To mount a disk image, double-click it in Finder. Finder will mount it as a virtual disk and show it on your desktop and in the sidebar of any Finder window. You can then open or copy the files as you wish. To unmount a disk image, select it and choose File > Eject from [user](#message the menu bar at the top of your screen, or drag it to the Trash.

How to Open Downloaded Apps from Unidentified Developers

Some apps that you download from the web are not from the Mac App Store or trusted sources. These apps are called unidentified developers and may pose a security risk to your Mac. By default, macOS prevents you from opening these apps unless you override the security settings. Heres how:

  • To open an app from an unidentified developer, locate it in Finder and Control-click it. Choose Open from the shortcut menu.

  • A dialog will appear asking you if youre sure you want to open the app. Click Open to confirm.

  • The app will launch and you can use it as normal. You only need to do this once for each app.

Note: You can also change the security settings to allow apps from anywhere to run on your Mac, but this is not recommended as it may expose your Mac to malware or viruses. To do this, go to System Preferences
